A humiliated Haskell Roach offers a hand sign of protest when photographed ca. 1902 in stylish Fauntleroy attire. Popularized by Englishman F. H. Burnett's writings from the 1880s, Little Lord Fauntleroy became the Harry Potter of his day, but illustrations of his lace collars inspired one of the most hated boyhood fashions of all time. Roach, a future Garland business and civic leader who died in 1991, never displayed this image publicly.
